In 2019 McLaren ventured into the Grand Tourismo segment with the McLaren GT, a supercar built for speed and for luxury over long distances. With its relatively spacious interior and refined chassis settings, the GT quickly became known as the most practical car in the British brand’s lineup. Now it is due a significant upgrade.

A New Model, or a Refined One
The manufacturer introduces the McLaren GTS, touting it as a new model. However, it is more accurately an exquisitely refined version of the previous GT. The external updates are minimal but telling: a new body color, Lava Grey, and light forged Turbine wheels wearing Pirelli P Zero tires designed for the car. The weight-saving work also brought roof panels made from recycled carbon fiber and titanium wheel bolts 35% lighter than the standard items.

Ten Kilograms Less, Fifteen Horsepower More
These changes have reduced the coupe’s equipped weight by 10 kg, bringing the McLaren GTS down to 1520 kg. The 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 gains 15 hp for a total of 635 hp, while torque holds at 630 Nm. The gains show up in the numbers, if only just: 0 to 100 km/h now takes 3.1 seconds and 200 km/h arrives in 8.9, each a symbolic 0.1 seconds quicker than before. Top speed nudges from 326 to 327 km/h. The car maintains its sophisticated seven-speed preselective robotic gearbox and rear-wheel drive.

What Changed Beyond the Numbers
The GTS’s appeal is not only its pace. In true McLaren fashion the adaptive dampers and carbon-ceramic brakes have been recalibrated to suit the brand’s racing DNA. The optional nose-lift system — invaluable for ramps and steep entrances — now works in four seconds, against ten on its predecessor, and raising it also lifts ground clearance from 110 to 127 mm.

This latest iteration of McLaren’s foray into luxury grand touring not only underscores its commitment to innovation but also reinforces its dedication to delivering the utmost in performance and comfort – a true masterpiece of automotive engineering.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the GTS really a new car? McLaren presents it as one, but it is better understood as a carefully refined GT: same architecture, same gearbox, small gains in weight and power.
How much quicker is it? A tenth of a second to 100 km/h and another tenth to 200 km/h, with top speed moving from 326 to 327 km/h. The differences are symbolic rather than transformative.
Why does the nose-lift matter? Because a low grand tourer meets ramps and steep entrances constantly. Cutting the operation from ten seconds to four makes it usable in traffic.
Where did the weight go? Ten kilograms, from recycled carbon fiber roof panels, titanium wheel bolts 35% lighter than standard, and the forged Turbine wheels.
