Toyota launched the Crown Sport crossover exclusively for the Japanese market in October 2023. It arrived as a hybrid whose performance never quite matched its bold, sporty exterior. To address that — and to continue its push towards electrification — Toyota has now introduced the Crown Sport RS, a plug-in hybrid variant that finally puts the numbers behind the styling.
A More Powerful Plug-In Hybrid Powertrain
The RS keeps the standard model’s basic architecture: a 2.5-liter naturally aspirated gasoline engine driving the front wheels through an electromechanical variator, plus a separate electric motor at the rear. What changed is the balance between them.
- Rear electric motor: unchanged at 54 hp and 121 Nm
- Combustion engine: slightly detuned, from 186 hp and 221 Nm to 177 hp and 219 Nm

Battery, Electric Range and Charging
The standard hybrid’s small 5 Ah nickel-metal hydride battery gives way to a 51 Ah (14.85 kWh) lithium-ion pack. That is enough for up to 90 km on electricity alone, and a fast charger takes the battery to 80% in 38 minutes. Combined with a full 55-liter fuel tank, total petrol-electric range exceeds 1200 km.
Stiffer Body, Bigger Brakes — and More Weight
The chassis was reworked to match the extra power. Additional reinforcements under the floor and in the central tunnel increase body rigidity, and the adaptive dampers have been recalibrated stiffer. Behind the 21-inch blackened wheels sit six-piston front brakes.
Together these attributes bring the RS closer to the sporty prowess its name suggests. There is a price, though: at 2030 kg it is significantly heavier than the 1810 kg base model.
“My Room” Mode and the Cabin
Unique to the RS is “My Room” mode, which allows unlimited use of the entertainment and climate systems while the car is charging. The vehicle can also power external devices drawing up to 1500 watts.
Visually, apart from the wheels and the vividly painted red brake calipers, the Crown Sport RS is distinguished from the standard hybrid only by subtle badges. Inside there are sport-profile seats, a striking black and red trim, and matching red seat belts.
