Toyota is rolling out an update for its Crown Crossover sedan. The refreshed model has already been unveiled for the US market — where it’s sold simply as the Toyota Crown — while the Japanese-spec facelift is set to debut soon.
A Quick Recap: What Is the Toyota Crown Crossover?
Toyota introduced the unusual Crown Crossover back in summer 2022. It was the first model built under the brand’s new strategy of turning “Crown” into a global sub-brand covering a full lineup of near-premium vehicles. Since then, new Crown models have launched in North America, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia, and the family has grown to include:
- Crown Sport — a compact crossover
- Crown Sedan — a classic executive sedan
- Crown Estate/Signia — a crossover-wagon
Now it’s time for the Crossover, the model that started it all, to get its mid-cycle refresh.
What’s New on the Outside
Based on official photos, the exterior changes are mostly in the details rather than a full redesign:
- A new rear bumper without the previous contoured stamping
- A revised two-tone paint scheme — the contrasting black finish has moved off the trunk lid and onto the rear pillars
- Protective crossover-style body cladding, now finished in gloss instead of matte
- Red brake calipers for the first time on top trims — RS in Japan and Platinum in the US
Interior: Mostly Unchanged
The cabin carries over largely as-is. Highlights include:
- Asymmetric dashboard layout with dual 12.3-inch displays for the instrument cluster and infotainment
- Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support
- Steering-wheel paddle shifters, heated steering wheel, and heated front and rear seats — all standard from the base trim
Higher trims add a digital key, head-up display, power trunk lid, panoramic sunroof, adaptive suspension, and a rear-steering chassis for improved maneuverability.
On safety, every Crown Crossover comes standard with Toyota Safety Sense 3.0. Top trims can be optioned with automatic parking-brake assist, traffic jam assist, and lane-change assist.
Powertrains: An Upgraded Base Hybrid
The biggest technical change is under the hood of the entry-level model.
Base hybrid (updated):
- All-wheel-drive fifth-generation hybrid system
- Naturally aspirated 2.5-liter engine
- CVT transmission
- Two electric motors
- Nickel-metal hydride battery
- Previously rated at 236 hp; Toyota hasn’t yet confirmed the updated output, though it’s expected to be higher
Top-spec Hybrid MAX (carried over unchanged):
- 2.4-liter turbocharged engine
- Six-speed automatic transmission
- Two electric motors
- Nickel-metal hydride battery
- Combined output of 349 hp
- Full-time all-wheel drive with automatic torque distribution (unlike the base hybrid’s on-demand rear-axle engagement)
Toyota hasn’t published updated acceleration or top-speed figures for the facelifted car. For reference, the pre-facelift Crown Crossover hit 0–62 mph (0–100 km/h) in 7.6 or 5.7 seconds depending on version, with a top speed of 112 or 124 mph (180 or 200 km/h).
Pricing
United States (2027 model year):
- Toyota Crown XLE Hybrid AWD: starting at $41,640 — just $200 more than the outgoing model
- Toyota Crown Platinum Hybrid MAX AWD: starting at $55,190
Japan:
The updated Crown Crossover will be officially unveiled and priced in Japan this September. Current pre-facelift pricing:
- Crown Crossover G: from ¥5,150,000 (~$31,400)
- Crown Crossover RS “The 70th”: from ¥6,800,000 (~$48,800)
The Bottom Line
The Toyota Crown Crossover facelift keeps the formula that’s worked so far — distinctive styling, a tech-forward interior, and a choice of two hybrid powertrains — while sharpening the exterior details and quietly improving the base hybrid system’s output. With US pricing already confirmed and only a modest increase over the outgoing model, the updated Crown Crossover looks set to remain a compelling alternative to more conventional executive sedans.
